Hello, our names are Mark and Allison. Welcome to our site, designed to update friends and family of our adventures motorbiking and 4X4ing the world, as well as possibly inspiring others that if we can give it a go, so can you!
The idea behind Are we there yet? was born during our travels on a hired motorbike in South East Asia in 2006. At the end of an inspirational day riding through remote villages, crossing rivers and rice paddies, we felt invincible and our minds wandered... if we could ride through Cambodia and Laos, why not across a continent... and why stop there when there is a whole world to explore? Okay, so we were emboldened by a bottle of wine (or two!), but the distances, politics and other obstacles did not seem insurmountable, and the only real reason why we could not do an adventure of that magnitude was down to our own decisions. So we decided to make it happen, and after buying a motorbike and Mark getting his license we set off across Europe and West Africa in 2008. Our plan was simple; to cross a continent and if possible continue beyond! We had no final destination and no timeline, figuring no fixed plans would allow us to be flexible en route and enjoy opportunities as they arose without having to rush to the next destination. Embarrassingly, we also had no paper maps, a GPS we couldn't figure out how to use and road tyres. For those that followed the last journey you would know that we made it as far as Ghana, before making the difficult decision to return to London in 2009 having had the adventure of a lifetime and still determined to achieve our dream of crossing a continent.
So here is Stage 2! This time we are certainly older, hopefully wiser, and hope to have learnt from our experiences... yep, we have maps this time though sadly still have not mastered the GPS! To allow us to explore more off the beaten track we are 4x4ing it this time, with the "luxuries" of being able to carry sufficient fuel, food and water for several days. But let's not forget the air-con and icy beers in the fridge, a major upgrade for two smelly bikers! We plan to leave London in late January 2010, again agreeing to travel whilst we were enjoying it, only restricted by budget, politics, the security situation and our trusty stead's mechanical state! Yeehah!
